Base population

The base population is derived from the Vintage 2023 population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau. The Vintage 2023 estimates series contains estimates from April 1, 2020 through July 1, 2023. We took the estimates for July 1, 2022 as our base population.

The age distribution in this estimates series is based on the blended base, which uses very limited information from the 2020 Census.

The oldest age group published estimates tables is 85 and over. For these projections we chose to have an oldest age group of 100 and over, and we used 2020 data and national cohort change ratios to derive populatio counts by single year of age for the ages 85 through 99.
