New York State projections 2022 - 2050

Trends in International migration

Net international migration is the difference between the number of people moving into the state from abroad, and the number of people emigrating out of the state to another country.

According to the Census Bureau population estimates the net internation migration was around 80,000 from 2003 through 2016. From 2016 to 2020 it declined to around 20,000 and since than increased again. There is much uncertainty around the size of these flows and we assumed constant flows that, depending on the scenario result in net international migration between 60 and 75 thousand persons.

Numbers of the recent arrival of many immigrants has not been integrated in the estimates yet and also not in our base population, nor in our projection assumptions.
