Biographical Statement: Fatma Mete joined the Department of Fiber Science & Apparel Design in March 2007 as an Associate Professor in Apparel Design major. Before coming to Cornell she taught apparel design, manufacturing and management courses for almost 20 years at University of Dokuz Eylul (Turkey). Professor Mete has also served as a design and product development consultant for several apparel manufacturing companies in the Turkish Apparel Industry and also for international textile&apparel buying organizations. She received her PhD in Fabric Modeling and Apparel CAD at the University of Leeds (England) in 1996 and has a master in Apparel Design from Aegean University (Turkey) in 1990. Her research focuses on investigation of the nature of the creative apparel design processes, scientific study of design activity, and visual analogy reasoning.

Current Research Activities:
My scholarly work focuses on knowledge and understanding the nature of creative apparel design processes. This study of creativity in design aims to develop new models of creative design processes to enhance creativity of designers, innovative approaches to design education that encourage creativity, innovative modes of design research, and eventually new technology to support human creativity. It includes the study of design as a change process, design variables, conceptualization, evolutionary design algorithms, symbol manipulation in intelligent actions and generative representations, and mathematical and visual analogy reasoning. It employs entirely new ways of thinking and tracing about how design ideas are developed, conceptualized, built, understood, evaluated and executed. The specific research projects are selected to address issues of concept-based creative apparel design processes, material inspired designs and adaptive or variant apparel design processes.
My second research interest is on mathematical modeling of fabric drape for apparel CAD. My multi-disciplinary design and science background enabled me to approach to the different aspects of apparel design research, based on designers, processes and products. |
